‘I don’t like to have a man’: Raquel Welch speaks about her four failed marriages, why she’s never stripped off and the sexy fur bikini that made her a superstar
There are sex symbols, and then there is Raquel Welch.
Spilling the beans: Raquel Welch appears on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, speaking about all aspects of her life, from her marriages to her stunning figure and sex symbol status
But the movie icon has admitted that she doesn’t see herself in that way - although she loves the attention - while also explaining why has never fully stripped off, despite expectations to do so.
The 75-year-old actress, who has appeared in over 40 movies, also opened up to Piers Morgan on his Life Stories programme about her dramatic personal life, which saw her married four times and also dating Hollywood heavyweights Steve McQueen, Warren Beatty and Dudley Moore.
When asked why she thinks her marriages haven’t worked out, she replied that she doesn’t ‘like to have a man’.
‘Because I’m too set in my ways. I like what I do, I actually enjoy being me and I make a very good living at it and I’m happy. I don’t have to have a man,’ she explained.
For her, it was all a matter of power and being able to make her own way, as she added: 'He’s not going to support me, and a lot of men don’t like that.
'I mean they like it in the beginning, they like the whole attraction and the sort of dance that we all do, but they don’t really like the fact that when we go some place together I become the person that’s focused on.
‘It just doesn’t work well with the male/female relationship.’
Welch separated from her fourth husband restaurateur Richard Palmer in 2003, after four years of marriage.
She was previously married to actor and producer André Weinfeld from 1980 until 1990, and before him there was Patrick Curtis, a producer, to whom she was married in 1967 until 1972.
Her first husband, who she got her name from, was James Welch: they were married for five years, from 1959 until 1964.
Welch went on to explain that she doesn’t regret any of her marriages, and doesn’t blame their failures on her own character flaws.
‘I had real feelings for all of those men,’ she said. ‘At the time I thought I was legitimately in love and that we could make a great life together, but it wasn’t in the cards.’
But the star isn’t sure if she will ever tie the knot again. When asked by Piers if it’s something she would do, despite her years, she replied: ‘I’m not too sure, I don’t think so. I’m not that good at it.’
However, the star - who has enjoyed some ‘platonic dates’ in recent years - is completely happy in herself: 'I’m just content. I feel like I’ve had a very lovely, beautiful life.
‘I don’t know exactly what’s around the corner. It’s not bothering me that much.’
